Renaming a community staple is hard work!

The process of developing the identity of Urban Roots stressed the need to convey that the co-op is a community-owned-and-operated gardening supply store and not a community garden. Meetings and brainstorming sessions were held to develop the new name, Urban Roots Cooperative Garden Market, with the accompanying tagline, “Helping Buffalo Gardeners Grow.”  These changes reflected Urban Roots’ mission as community-driven gardening store providing the community with expert knowledge and a diverse range of plants, tools, and supplies.

After clarifying the name, OtherWisz began to redesign the visual brand. The original funky typography was updated to an organic, less playful typeface to represent the business’ maturity while still being amicable and down to earth. The typeface for the co-op’s name is unique and whimsical with its botanical-inspired forms, and the qualifier underneath was set in an easy to read, sans-serif font.

Four color options for four seasons

The original Urban Roots flower logo was retained for the value of its brand recognition and its solid form. However, the color scheme was revised to expand the brand palette for a variety of media applications.

The final touch to the brand was the development of a flexible color system that can change throughout the seasons. The four seasonally-themed color versions convey that Urban Roots operates year-round.
